Title: "Riga.”

Description:

Rare and large bird's-eye plan of Riga from Johannes Janssonius's town book of northern Europe, "Illustriorum principumque urbium septentrionalium Europae tabulae", also issued as "Theatrum praecipuarum urbium positarum ad septentrionalem Europae plagam" (Amsterdam, 1657). It shows Riga under Swedish rule, which began when Gustavus Adolphus captured the city in 1621. The medieval walls with their round towers and gates are surrounded by a ring of star-shaped earthen bastions and water-filled moats.

The plan is drawn from above the left bank of the Daugava, looking across the river at the walled town. Inside the walls, every street and block of gabled houses is drawn, with the main landmarks named in German: "Der Domm" (Riga Cathedral), "St. Petri" (St Peter's Church), "St. Iohannis" (St John's), "St. Iacobi" (St James's) and the "Raht Hauss" (Town Hall). At the western end, behind its own bastion, stands "Das Schloss", the castle of the Livonian Order. The outer works are labelled one by one: "Landt Thuern undt Pfort", "Land Bolwerck", "New Pfort Bolwerck", "St. Iacobs Bolwerck", "Batstabe Bolwerck", "Mart stal Bolwerck", "Ruter Bolwerck" and "Schloss Bolwerck".

In front of the city, the "Duina Fluvius" (Daugava) is crowded with merchant ships, small sailing craft and rowing boats along the quay, a reminder of Riga's role as one of the great trading ports of the Baltic. The foreground shows the river islands with farmsteads and trees, and a bastioned fort on the opposite bank. The coat of arms of Riga (the city gate with two towers, the lion's head and the crossed keys under a cross) appears in the upper left, and a compass rose sits on the river.

At about 51 x 40 cm, it is one of the largest and most decorative 17th-century plans of Riga, a highlight for any collection of Baltic city views.

Description:

Rare, Johannes Janssonius issue and one of the most decorative map of the North Pole. It replaced Mercator's map in the Mercator/Hondius atlases in 1636, and incorporated much of the knowledge gained by the English in their search for a Northwest Passage to Asia. The geographical information indicates knowledge gained from the explorations of Frobisher, David, Hudson, Button, Foxe and James. The fascinating whaling and sealing scenes that surround the map also depict Dutch activity in the region.

Title: "Nova et Accurata Iaponiæ Terræ Esonis ac Insularum ex novissima detectione descriptio Apud Ioannem Ianßonium.”

Description:

Striking and highly detailed Jan Jansson's copper engraved map of Japan and Korea, showing portions of China, Landt van Eso and Compagnies Land. The map was published by Jan Jansson in atlas "Nieuwen Atlas". This sea chart of Japan, also marking the semi-mythical islands of 'Eso' & 'Companies Land'.

The original motivation behind the discovery of the lands that influenced this map came for a 16th century Spanish legend. The legend tells of a land to the east of Japan that is so rich with silver and gold, that the homes if the inhabitants were constructed from precious metals. This legend ultimately prompted two voyages funded by the Dutch East India Company. While the first voyage proved to be a complete failure, a second under Maerten de Vries and Cornelius Jansz Coen in 1643 was somewhat of a success with regard to the discovery of new lands. Sadly none of the land discovered resembled rang true to the old Spanish legend.

The lands discovered by Vries and Coen were actually the island of Hokkaido, which is mapped as Eso and connected to the Russian island of Sakhalin and the Kruil islands of Kunashir (Staten Eylant) and Iturop (Compagnies Land).

Title: "Tartaria sive Magni Chami Imperium”

Description:

Rare Jansson edition of this decorative map of China, Tartary and Central Asia, extending from Mongolia and Xanadu to the Caspian and the Volga River and to Tibet and the Upper Ganges River. Map illustrates the knowledge obtained by the English and Dutch explorers as far as the Ob River, with the balance of the map based on the reports of Marco Polo and the Greek classics. The deserts are filled with a wild assortment of devils and dragons, being held at bay from China by the Great Wall. Explorers flank the distance scale and the title is symbolically engraved onto the saddle blanket of a camel, representing the trade over the Silk Road. This map is nearly identical to Blaeu's map of the same title, but does not have a scale at the top and bottom. French text on verso.

The map comes from Janssonius French edition atlas “Atlas Novus“ published in Amsterdam, 1639.
