Title: "To Her most Sacred Majesty Carolina Queen of Great Britain, France & Ireland. This Map of Europe According to the Newest and most Exact Observations is most Humbly Dedicated by your Majesties most Obedient Servant Herman Moll Geographer.”

&

"Printed for I. Bowles Print and Map seller at the Black Horse in Cornhill and T. Bowles Print & Mapseller next to the Chapter house in St. Pauls Church yard. 1708. Sold by H. Moll over against Devereux Court, without Temple Bar, and P. Overton Map & Printseller near St. Dunstans Church Fleetstreet, and by I. King Map & Printseller at ye Globe in the Poultry."

Description:

A monumental two-sheet map of Europe by Herman Moll, the leading map-maker of early 18th-century London, from his great folio atlas "The World Described". The plate was first published in 1708 with a dedication to Queen Anne. After 1727 it was revised with a new portrait and a dedication to Queen Caroline, wife of George II. This is that later state, published while Caroline was queen (1727–1737).

The cartouche is one of the most theatrical of its time:

The Queen: her portrait sits in a laurel wreath between the English rose and the Scottish thistle, above the dedication to "Her most Sacred Majesty Carolina, Queen of Great Britain, France & Ireland".

The four continents: on the left, a feather-crowned Native American (America) beside a European carrying the Union flag (Europe). On the right, an African (Africa) and a turbaned figure in an ermine-lined robe (Asia).

The royal arms: at the bottom, the arms of George II supported by the lion and the unicorn, with the mottoes "Honi soit qui mal y pense" and "Dieu et mon droit".

The map covers Europe from Iceland and the North Cape to the coast of North Africa, and from the Atlantic to the Caspian Sea, Persia and "Siberia or Dominions of Tartary". Russia is divided into "Moscovy in Europe" and "Moscovy in Asia". The map is densely filled with towns and rivers, with political borders in colour. Longitudes are given from both Ferro (El Hierro) and London, and a scale shows "Miles of Great Britain". The large Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is shown in detail.

The inset at lower right is titled "A New Draught of ye Artificiall Channel, and other great works, as Dams, Locks &c. made in order to Passage of Ships thro the Rivers of Ilafla and Camisinca, and to the Wolga as also to the Tanais or Don for a Communication between the Euxines and Caspian Seas". It shows Peter the Great's project to join the Volga and the Don, on which the English engineer John Perry worked. A dotted line on the main map continues the dreamed-of route from the canal through the Black Sea, the Bosphorus, the Aegean and the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.

A large, decorative and historically rich map of Europe, and a fine example of English map-making at the height of Moll's career.

Cartographer: Herman Moll (1654 – 1732)

Publisher: John & Thomas Bowles, Herman Moll, Philip Overton and John King
Leaf size: 98,0 x 63,5 cm (if two sheets joined)
Year: c. 1730 (plate dated 1708)

Title: "L'Europe divisée selon l'étendue de ses principales parties, et dont les points principaux sont placez sur les observations de Messrs. de l'Académie Royale des Sciences”

Description:

One of Nicolas de Fer's most ambitious wall maps of Europe — the fully developed "text-and-emblem" edition, framed by its own explanatory apparatus rather than left to speak for itself.

De Fer, geographer to the King of Spain and to the Dauphin, first issued this map of Europe in 1695, drawn on the latest observations of the Royal Academy of Sciences; in that original state it was a comparatively plain sheet. The map is bordered by sixteen finely engraved medallions of the peoples of Europe in national dress, each with a brief character sketch and, for the principal nations, a view of their capital: the French of Paris, the Danes of Copenhagen, the Dutch of Amsterdam, the Germans, the English, the Swedes of Stockholm, the Poles, the Hungarians of Buda, the Italians of Rome, the Muscovites, the Turks of Constantinople, the Spanish of Madrid and the Portuguese of Lisbon — together with the Lapps and Samoyeds, the Greenlanders and Icelanders, and the Tartars at the map's furthest margins. These, together with the two flanking columns of engraved text — Description de l'Europe to the left, Explication des Ornemens de cette Carte to the right — were only added after de Fer's death in 1720, when his son-in-law Guillaume Danet inherited the business and reissued the plates from 1723.

This particular impression was printed later still: the title imprint credits another of de Fer's sons-in-law, J.F. Bénard, publishing from de Fer's own long-standing address on the Quai de l'Horloge, and is dated 1740 — while the dedication cartouche lower on the sheet retains Danet's imprint and the date 1730, a trace of the plate's passage between the two branches of the family firm.

The map extends from Greenland and the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Barbary coast and deserts of North Africa in the south, and east past the Black Sea and Crimea to the frontiers of Persia, with a dedication cartouche to Monseigneur le Dauphin.

Cartographer: Nicolas de Fer / J.F. Bénard (dedication cartouche dated 1730, Guillaume Danet)

Sheet size: 159,7 x 108,5 cm
Year: 1740
Technique: copper engraving

Condition:
Good condition. Contemporary highlighting in green. A few faint spots of foxing, mainly confined to the text panels. Engraved and laid down on canvas for wall display.

Title: "Octava Evropae Tabula” & "Nona Evro" & "Pae Tabula"

Description:
Very rare Ptolemaic map of European Sarmatia (Sarmatia Europae), a historical classical region covering modern-day Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Southern Russia. The map prominently features the Tauric Chersonese (Crimea Peninsula) pointing down into the Palus Maeotis (Sea of Azov) on the lower right. It features ancient mountain ranges like the Hyperborean and Riphean mountains drawn in a stylized, early Renaissance pictorial format.

Verso, on left side (Nona Evro) depicts the ancient Roman Balkans and Central-Eastern Europe. It clearly marks ancient provinces such as Dacia (modern Romania & Moldova), Iaziges Metanaste, Mysia Superior and Inferior (modern Serbia, Bulgaria), and Thracia. The right side (Pae Tabula) showing the Sicily island, Italy.

Silvano’s 1511 book is famous for being one of the earliest to utilize two-color printing (red ink for major regional names and black ink for local topography and smaller text labels).

Comes from the Bernardus Sylvanus book „Claudii Ptholemaei Alexandrini Liber Geographiae cum tabulis et universali figura et cum additione locorum quae a recentioribus reperta sunt diligenti cura emendatus et impressus.", published by Jacobus Pentius de Leucho in Venice, 1511.

Title: ""

Description:

Map of Northern Europe and centered on Poland, the First Printed Modern Map of Northern & Central Europe.

The map is very important for Lithuania, because it is the second printed map to feature Lithuania's name.

Cartographically the Scandinavia map is based on the manuscript map by Claudius Clavus 1427 , printed «Ulm 1482 map» and a map of Europe based on manuscript map of 1460 of Germany by Cardinal Nicolas Cusanus (Nikolaus of Kues, Nicolaus de Cusa; his original name was Nicholas Kryffts), printed at Eichstätt in 1491.

Latin edition.

Page number: CCXCIX

The author of the chronicle was a Nuremberg bibliophile, physician Hartmann Schedel, who spent his whole life collecting information for the chronicle. He had amassed a huge personal library, which was extremely useful to him when compiling his “Liber Chronicarum”. His library contained 370 manuscripts and 670 printed works, including the works of the most famous Italian and German humanists. For that time, it was a truly extensive personal library. The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Albrecht Dürer may also have collaborated. Antonius Koberger, one of the most serious printers in Nuremberg, was chosen to print “Liber Chronicarum.” He started his printing business in 1470 with the establishment of a modest printing house. The chronicle was commissioned by the wealthy Nuremberg merchants Sebald Schreyer and his son-in-law Sebastian Kammermeister.

It is believed that the Latin edition may have been printed in about 1,500 copies, and the German edition in about 1,000 copies. This is a very large circulation, since incunabula were usually printed in an edition of 100–300 copies. The chronicle was sold at different prices: an unbound and uncolored copy cost two guilders, a bound copy cost six. It is known that in 1509 there were still 571 copies left unsold, of which 47 were unbound.

The chronicle was printed in two editions, in Latin and German, both in large folio format. The Latin chronicle has 326 leaves, is 43 x 30 cm in size, and has two colophons. They indicate the date of publication differently: the first states that the printing was completed on the fourth day of June 1493, the second – that on the 12th day of July of the same year. The German edition was completed on the 23rd day of December 1493. About 400 copies of the Latin and 300 copies of the German edition of “Liber Chronicarum” have survived to this day.

Title: "[Europa Regina]"

Description:

Allegorical map showing Europe in the shape of a woman. The representation of Europa Regina, or Queen of the World, was first drawn by Johannes Bucius in 1537. Her crown, placed on the Iberian peninsula, is shaped after the Carolingian hoop crown. France and the Holy Roman Empire make up the upper part of her body, with Bohemia being the heart. Her long gown stretches to Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Livonia, Bulgaria, Muscovy, Macedonia and Greece. In her arms, formed by Italy and Denmark, she holds a sceptre and an orb (Sicily). When the Europa regina was introduced, Charles V of Habsburg controlled both the Holy Roman Empire and the kingdoms of Spain, claiming to be the universal emperor of Europe. This may explain why the map is oriented westwards to have Spain as the crowned head, and why the imperial insignia - scepter, Carolingian crown, and orb - are those of the Holy Roman Emperor.

Map comes from the German edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmography, titled “Cosmographey oder beschreibung aller Länder”, published by Heinrich Petri in Basel, 1598.

Description:

A very rare satirical map of Europe, French postcard. Each of the countries represented as the head of their leader or by a national personification. Spain appears in the costume of a matador; Emperor Wilhelm in a pointed helmet; the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V in a characteristic fez. Victor Emmanuel, with characteristic upright moustache, peeks out of the boot of Italy; the emperor Franz Joseph has two impressive sideburns in Austria. George V is pictured smoking a pipe. The enormous face of the Tsar looks menacingly at the three countries of the hostile Triple Alliance.

Title: "Humoristische Karte von Europa im Jahre 1914.”

Description:

This rare political caricature map of Europe depicts the continent at the outbreak of World War I. It depicts the Germans' view of the alliance situation and territorial issues towards the end of the first year of the war. The key countries involved in the war are represented by human caricatures with various props that help illustrate the situation.

Germany is shown as an innocent good guy beset on all sides by the vicious and the avaricious, "the peaceful victim of its neighbors' unprovoked aggression, who with her allies, is opposing her attackers' savagery with irresistible force.", grasping the Frenchman by his throat and punching the Russian bear. Germany's bees to attack its enemies, which appear on the map as both bees and missiles.

France, already covered in bees and calls to England for help.

The giant Russian bears an "Angel of Peace" symbol on his cap, with a bottle of Vodka in one hand and a whip of "revolution" in the other hand. The Russian opens his mouth wide in an attempt to swallow Germany and Austria whole, but is deterred by the German bees.

England, who has caused Egypt to declare war, stands on bags of money while being punched in the face by an iron fist. The English bulldog finds it difficult to breathe with an Indian snake wrapped around its neck as Ireland attempts to cut the chain which links it to the mainland. The Englishman has also dragged Japan into the war, and holds a string that is attached to Japan, depicted in an inset at left.

Italy remains tucked well down in its 'boot'.

The Turk is shown reclining, his arm in a sling, lightly wounded by the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, but bearing a lit candle, which is impaled on the tip of a scimitar in his other hand and threatens to explode the powder keg under the loutish, drunken Russian.

Austria is shooting the Russian bear.

Belgium, whose people shows itself to be a poisonous toad, has already been skewered on the German fixing pin in order to be incorporated into the German collection.

Montenegro, the fat Nikita foolishly fights against Germany and Austria-Hungary and jubilantly receives Russian rubles for his effort.

Spain, King Alfonse counts his war chest, his family is against unnecessary expenses, while the knight Don Quixote already raises his lance.

Portugal leans comfortably against Spain while reading the war reports.

Holland is impolitely interrupted during breakfast as a stray bomb lands in his cup of cocoa.

Denmark peacefully makes butter deliveries to German, the bayonet point of 1864 has been made safe.

Norway, as a friend and brother of Germans, applauds us.

Sweden watches developments in Russia closely and in arms.

Switzerland watches the world conflagration in all comfort and is already an asylum for homeless Russian grand dukes.

Rumania energetically forges its sword.

Bulgaria, Ferdinand busily washes his saber, still bloody from the Balkan War.

Greece, with its conquered bit of Turkey, cleverly considers its next action.

Albania, the 'Commission' persists in waiting in quiet prayer.

The map is crammed with numerous subtle references to national stereotypes and historical events. German text below the map describing each country's "character".

The map was issued by Karl Lehmann-Dumont and published in Dresden in 1914 by Leutert and Schneidewind.

Description:

Original, Dutch edition, of Paul Haddol's satirical political cartoon map of Europe showing countries personified in caricature and alluding to the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. France, Alsace and Lorraine have already lost. England is neutral, but the flag is broken and there is a large wool bale with guns sticking out. (A reference to the secret arms shipments to France). Italy is playing cards with Rome (patience). Spain is looking for a new king. Greece has become detached from Turkey and Russia is already sharpening its knife to cut off a large piece of European Turkey. This war, which lasted until May 1871, ended in defeat for France and led to the Paris Revolt that spawned the Paris Commune. This war saw the first use of machine guns and balloons for reconnaissance. The humiliation of France made this war, in a way, a prelude to World War I and later World War II.

Published by Emrick & Binger Haarlem in 1870.

Description:

Original, Dutch edition, of Paul Haddol's satirical political cartoon map of Europe showing countries personified in caricature and alluding to the tensions that finally erupted as the Franco-Prussian War in July 1870. In the center, a buffoonish Prussia interacts with its suspicious neighbors. England is depicted as an old woman holding its dog, Ireland, by a leash. Spain and Turkey are portrayed as unconcerned women on the fringes relaxing with a cigarette and a hookah respectively. Corsica and Sardinia become an impish figure mooning the viewer. A rifle with a bayonet near the bottom edge is sardonically labeled “Degrees of Longitude.”
