Description:

A woodcut showing the creation of the world by God according to the Book of Genesis, the seventh day.

A Christian view of the universe: at the centre is the earth surrounded by other three elements – water, air and fire. Further comes planetary spheres: the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Next displayed the dome of signs of the zodiac, then the crystalline heaven and then Aristotle’s primum mobile – the largest and swiftest sphere, the physical origin of life, motion. The winds grace the four corners.

On verso woodcut with the story of creation of the sixth day, God creating Adam from clay. This clay is interpreted alchemically as the “prima materia,” or first matter, from which all life springs. Beside the pair of God and Adam, nature is depicted as a harmonious Eden with free-flowing waters and animals.

The engraving comes from the Schedel’s Nuremberg Chronicle, woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut and Albrecht Dürer, printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg, 1493.

The Nuremberg Chronicles was the first printed history of the known world with about 2000 woodcuts the most picturesque work of the early time of printing. It became one of the most popular book of the 15th. century. German edition.
