Description:

The pocket atlas, the first edition known of an entirely new edition, based on Ortelius’ “Theatrum Orbis Terrarium…”.  All the small maps are new in this edition’ (Koemann, Ort 63). The 110 maps of the atlas and 8 (instead of 13) of the supplement ‘Additamentum’ are included: 1 world map, 4 continent maps and 1 small schematic map of the Old World in the text, also 100 maps of Europe: France (26), Iberian Peninsula (7), Benelux (11), Germany (11), Italy (22) and others, 8 of Asia and 5 of Africa. Without the copper title and print title, text part incomplete at the beginning, the ‘Additamentum’ (with pre-bound print title) without text sheets.

The maps were engraved by the brothers Ambrosius and Ferdinand Arsenius and the text was written by Michel Coignet (1549 – 1623) translated from the works by Petrus de Medina.

This “pocket” version of Ortelius’s atlas was used by travelers and students for whom the folio would be inconvenient or expensive.
