Description:

Bird’s-eye view of the Egyptian capital Cairo with an eastern orientation. The Nile river can be seen in the lower half with ships, boats and crocodiles. Outside the city walls there are other ancient monuments and  several pyramids at the bottom right. There are scenes of people trading, facing off for battle and traveling along the city’s perimeter. Verso a German text on Kairo with two small text woodcuts (the bull god Apis and another view of the city).

Map comes from the German edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmography, titled “Cosmographey oder beschreibung aller Länder, Herrschafften, fürnemmsten Stetten, geschichten, gebreüchen, handtierungen &c.”, published in 1628 by Heinrich Petri in Basel.
