1640 – W. J. Blaeu – Prussia Nova Tabula

400

Title:                      “Prussiae nova Tabula. Auctore Gasparo Henneberg Erlichensi.”

Description:
This finely engraved map covers northeastern Poland from about Gdansk to Lithuania, and includes the present-day Russian enclave of Kaliningrad Oblast. The map is filled with detail and engraved with forests, mountains, fortresses. A large strapwork title cartouche attributes the map to Caspar Henneberg von Ehrlichen, a German cartographer. Willem Blaeu’s imprint appears in a decorative cartouche at bottom left. A legend, distance scale, ship, sea monster, and compass rose complete the composition. A clean and bright example with a sharp impression and attractive color. Map comes from the atlas “Theaters Orbis Terrarum” or Atlas Maior as it had been known by this time. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th century. The translation of the text from Latin into Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish for a number of volumes has been used for those involved in typography and letterpress activities. It is estimated that more than 80 men have been employed in Bloemgracht, not including engravers who worked elsewhere, with over 15 printing presses running simultaneously.
