1645 – W. J. BLAEU – Americae Nova Tabula

Title:                 “Americae nova Tabula. Auct: Guiljelmo Blaeuw.”

Description:
This highly decorative Willem Blaeu’s “carte à figures” map of America from the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography. The map’s side borders provide ten fine miniatures of Native Americans from Virginia, Florida, California (Nove Albions) and other areas in characteristic dress. Nine important harbors and cities, including Havana, St. Domingo, Cartegena, Mexico City, Cusco, Potosi, I. la Mocha in Chile, Rio de Janeiro and Olinda in Brazil are illustrated at the top border. California is shown as a peninsula: only one Great Lake is seen. An inset shows Greenland and Iceland. This map illustrates excellent detail throughout, including a classical rendition of the West Coast of America and dozens of place names along the East Coast. Map is decorated with eight sailing ships, four sea monsters and vignettes in the interior of the continent showing Indian life.

This is the fifth state of the plate with Latin text on verso, comes from Blaeu’s atlas “Theatrum orbis terrarum.” published in Amsterdam 1645.
