Title:                      “Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula. Wahre Bildtnuss des Gantzen Erden Krayses mit Allen seinen Theilen.”​

Description:
Very decorative World map, presented on Mercator’s projection with cartography closely copied from Blaeu’s world map of 1606, second state, without Merian’s name on lower right. A German title and notation concerning the discovery of the Americas discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus and in 1499 by Amerigo Vespucci. The south pole is called “Magellanica”. California is present as peninsula. North America is separated from Asia by a narrow Strait of Anian. Korea is shown as an island. The map is enriched with compass roses, numerous ships, sea monsters and two polar projections in the lower corners.

Comes from Merian’s atlas “Neue Archontologia cosmica, das ist Beschreibung aller Kayserthumben, Königreichen & Republicken der gantzen Welt, die keinen Höhern erkennen … zusammen gelesen … durch Johann Ludwig Gottfried … verlegt von Matthæo Merian. Frankfurt am Main. Wolffgang Hoffmans. M. DC. XXXXVI. “ published in Frankfurt, 1646.
