1697 – W. M. Coronelli – Asia Divisa

Title:                      “Asia Divisa nelle sue Parti secondo lo stato presente…

Description:

This exceptional Coronelli’s map is the right part of a two sheet map of Asia. It shows the latest discoveries in Southeast Asia, with Australia and Japan and is dedicated to the Jesuit missionaries in Asia. Many discoveries are described with dates, places and discoverer.

Australia is shown as connected to New Guinea and is incomplete in its outline. Coronelli probably collaborated with Tillemon, producing this accurate map, it also notes that New Zealand was discovered in 1654, but not the correct date of 1642. This map is a mixture of known and unknown.
