Description:
Rare and highly decorative map of North and South America showing California as an island by the Valk brothers, after Carol Allard and De Wit maps. California is separated from the mainland by the island-dotted Mare Rubrum. The Great Lakes are formed with an enlarged Lake Michigan, Mississippi River shown well west of real location. Decorative cartouche shows an Amazon queen in a feather headdress, surrounded by animals, sugar cane and Indian who presents her with gold.

Comes from Gerard & Leonard Valk atlas “Atlas minor sive Totius orbis terrarum contracta delinea ex conatibus Nic. Visscher. Amst. Bat : Apud Nicolaum Visscher Cum privil: ordin: general: belgii foederati. Ger. de Lairesse detin & Sculp.”  published in Amsterdam, circa 1705.
