1731 – C. Cellarius – Veteris Orbis Climata ex Strabone

200

Title:                      Veteris Orbis Climata ex Strabone”

Description:
A rare and beautifully engraved map of the old world divided into seven climatic zones according to the Ancient Greek geographer Strabo. Europe, Asia, and northern Africa are surrounded by eight compass points worth of wind heads. Of particular interest is ‘Aquilo,’ the north wind, characterized as a winged dog, held in check by a chain leash, grasped by a Neptune-like figure seated on an immense, hollowed out rock at the North Pole. Behind barred openings in the rock are more chained creatures, possibly representing frigid storms waiting to be released at the whim of the gods. Comes from “Notitia Orbis Antiqui”.
