Title:                      “Orbis Terrarum Typus de Integro in Plurimis Emendatus, Auctus, et Icunculius Illustratus”​

Description:
Highly decorative double hemisphere World map, surrounded by engravings including allegorical representations of the continents as well as native inhabitants and wildlife. This is the “first map” to be inserted in a Dutch bible by Nicholas Visscher and published over the next hundred years. In the lower part of the Western Hemisphere text describes the discovery of America and recent voyages. The northwest coast of North America shows California as a peninsula. Parts of Australia are shown, but the north coast of Australia discovered during Tasman’s second voyage in 1644 is not yet shown. Four continents are shown in the corners in allegorical form with examples of their animal life and inhabitants. Two celestial spheres are displayed in the Eastern Hemisphere. Dutch text on verso.

First edition, the map comes from Dutch Bible published by Van Ravesteijn in Amsterdam circa 1660.
