500 €

Title:                     “Respublica, sive status regni Poloniae, Lituaniae, Prussiae, Livoniae etc. Diversorum autorum.”

Description:
Rare book of the Republic of Poland from the famous series of the so-called “small republics” published by House of Elzevir in the years 1617-1649 in a pocket format, making it easy to take the work with you on a trip.

It includes, among others, the treatise of the Polish historian Jan Łasicki (1534–1605) on the gods of the Samogitians, other Sarmatians and false Christians. It also includes fragments of the treatise on the customs of the Tatars, Lithuanians and Muscovites by the diplomat Mykolas Lietuvis (Michalo Lituanus), Secretary of the Chancellery of the Grand Duke of Lithuania. The volume also reprints Alessandro Guagnini’s accounts of the Lithuanians’ origin and of Samogitia, the military articles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Marcin Kromer’s description of Poland, extracts from de Thou and Botero, and John Barclay’s judgement on Poland and the Poles.

The engraved title page shows the crowned royal arms of Poland-Lithuania with the Swedish and Vasa quarters of King Sigismund III. A chain collar with a ram pendant circles the arms, which stand between a knight in plate armor and a Polish nobleman in fur-trimmed dress with feathered cap and battle-axe.

The book was prepared by the Dutch geographer Johannes de Laet, published by House of Elzevir in Leiden, 1627.
