Description:
Very decorative woodcut from Hartmann Schedel’s the Latin edition of the “Liber chronicarum” published in 1493. This page focuses on historical figures, religious writers, and political leaders from the medieval period, highlighted by distinctive woodcut portraits carved by the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff.
It presents the portraits of:
Saint Roch (S. Rochus): a 14th-century patron saint against the plague. The text recounts his noble birth in Montpellier, his pilgrimage to Rome, his miraculous healing of plague victims, his own infection, and his retreat into a forest where a dog faithfully brought him bread.
Johannes Andreae: A prominent 14th-century Italian canon lawyer and professor at the University of Bologna.
Johannes de Monte Villa (Sir John Mandeville): A famous travel writer or compiler of a highly popular, fantastical medieval travelogue detailing journeys through Asia and the Middle East.
Verso the page depicts the renowned Italian Renaissance poet and humanist Franciscus Petrarcha (Petrarch) and Saint Ivo of Kermartin (S. yvo doctor), a 13th-century lawyer and patron saint of lawyers and abandoned children, wearing a doctor’s cap and holding a book. Lower Section displays “Gonzagorum regni principium”, documenting the historical origins and rule of the noble house of Gonzaga in Mantua, Italy.

The Nuremberg Chronicles was the first printed history of the known world with about 2000 woodcuts the most picturesque work of the early time of printing. It became one of the most popular books of the 15th. century. The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, teacher of Albrecht Dürer and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger.
