Description:
Rare copper engraved, oriented to the East, sea chart of the island of Saaremaa (Oesel) in Estonia, Gulf of Riga, Baltic Sea. The chart extends across the De Strate van Ryghe (Irbe Strait) to show part of the Courland Peninsula in Latvia. Decorated by a title, scale and descriptive cartouche, a compass rose, several vessels and sea monsters, and depictions of mountains and trees. Later state from a Latin edition with numbering 38 at lower left and coastal profile lettered A.
The map comes from the Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer see atlas “”Spieghel der Zeevaert…” published in Antwerp, 1590.
