1691 – V. M. Coronelli – Terre Artiche
700 €
Titles: “Terre Artiche”
One of the most remarkable depiction of the North Pole, Arctic Circle, Greenland, Spitzbergen, with parts of Canada, Iceland and Europe. The title cartouche is surrounded by clouds and wind-blowing cherubs and includes a formal dedication to Venetian secretary Ercole Lepoli, he was one of the atlas’ sponsor. Known discoveries are clearly engraved while coastlines that are subject to speculation are less defined. It includes the description of discovery of Greenland by Herico Russo in 982AD followed by Danish voyages in 1379 and also the discoveries made by Barentsz, John Davis, William Baffin, Henry Hudson, Antonio Zeno and Sir Thomas Button. A large cartouche on the center is adorned with ice sheets. The map is a significant historical artifact, illustrating the geographical understanding of the Arctic regions in the late 17th century.
The map comes from Coronelli’s atlas “Corso geografico universale, o sia, La terra divisa nelle sue parti, e subdistinta ne’ suoi gran regni / esposta in tavole geografiche, ricorrette, et accresciute di tutte le nuove scoperte, ad uso dell’Accademia cosmografica degli Argonauti dal padre maestro Vincenzo Coronelli M.C…” published in Venice, 1691.
