450

Title:                      “Statt Landtsperg”

Description:
A very rare, large and detailed town view of Landsberg am Lech, Germany by Michael Wening. The center features a wide prospect of the city and its fortifications along the Lech River. Included are town’s coat of arms, architectural landmarks such as churches and fortifications, along with a numbered key on the right for identification of buildings.

The engraving comes from by Michael Wening atlas “Historico-topographica descriptio. Das ist: Beschreibung, dess Churfürsten- und Hertzogthumbs Ober- und Nidern Bayrn, welches in vier Theil oder Rennt-Aembter, als Oberlands München und Burgkhausen, Underlands aber in Landshuet unnd Straubing abgetheilt ist […]. Thail 1. München: bey Johann Lucas Straub, gem: lobl. Landtschafft Buchtruckern, anno M.DCCI., published by Johann Lucas Straub in München 1701. The work contains a total of 846 illustrations across four volumes, documenting cities, monasteries, and castles throughout Bavaria. Michael Wening works are highly valued by historians because those he created in loco (on-site) feature a high degree of precision, documenting buildings before later Baroque renovations.
