Description:
Very decorative copper engraved map of Africa and Madagascar, based on the discoveries of Leon L’Africain. A magnificent decorative cartouche, with a large allegorical scene showing Européens traders in negotiation with aboriginals. The map describes Africa with details on the coasts, leaving the interior blank with the name “Terra Incognito”. Egypt, Nubia and Abbysinia are well described. We can see the Dutch colonies of Castell Batov and Stellenbosch near the Cape in South Africa.
The map comes from the Johann Baptist Homann atlas “Maior Atlas Scholasticus ex Triginta Sex Generalibus et Specialibus…“ drawn Tobias Mayer and published by Homann Heirs in Nuremberg 1737.
