1737 – J. B. Homann – Africa Secundum legitimas
Title: “AFRICA Secundum legitimas Projectionis Stereographiae regulas… Leonis Africani…à IOH. MATTHIA HASIO…Homannianorum Heredibum…1737”
Nice copper engraved map of Africa and Madagascar, dated 1737, based on the discoveries of Leon L’Africain. A magnificent decorative cartouche, with a large allegorical scene showing Européens traders in negotiation with aboriginals. The map describes Africa with details on the coasts, leaving the interior blank with the name “Terra Incognito”. Egypt, Nubia and Abbysinia are well described. We can see the Dutch colonies of Castell Batov and Stellenbosch near the Cape in South Africa.
