Description:
Beautiful and very detailed engraving displaying the Boïer, a type of boat or rowboat with flat floors, forked mast, with two soles.
Letters displays: A bowsprit mast. B mainmast. C forked yard. D foremast. E rudder. F rudder tiller. G sole. H captain’s cabin. I bow room where the cabins and kitchen are. K stern room.
Buche or flibot, a small vessel used by the Dutch and English for herring fishing.
Letters displays: A the bowsprit brought on deck. B the mainmast placed on its stanchion. C the mizzenmast. D the flag staff. E the fishing net. F stanchions to carry the masts when they are brought on deck. G aft room. H forward room where the galley is located.
The engraving comes from Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert, based on a work by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, book “Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers…”, drawn by Goussier, engraved by Benard Direx, published in Geneve, 1778.
