1798 – Homann Erben – Italia in suos Status divisa

Title:                      “Italia in suos Status divisa, ex d’Anvilliano Rizzi Zannonique prototypis desumta. Curantibus Homannianis Haeredibus. A°. 1790. Denuo emendata A°. 1798.”

Description:

A large, detailed map of the Italian peninsula divided into its pre-unification states — the Republic of Venice (extending along the Istrian and Dalmatian coast), the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the States of the Church, the Kingdom of Naples, the Kingdom of Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica — with Switzerland, the Tyrol, and the North African Barbary coast shown at the margins. The map explicitly credits its source material to two of the leading scientific cartographers of the later 18th century: Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782), the great French Enlightenment geographer known for rigorous, source-critical mapmaking, and Giovanni Antonio Rizzi-Zannoni (1736–1814), the Italian cartographer famous for his detailed and highly accurate survey of the Kingdom of Naples — a notable pedigree reflecting the more scientifically-grounded cartography of this later period, as opposed to the more decorative conventions of a century earlier. A five-scale distance key at lower right accounts for the different regional mile measures then in use across Italy (Italian, Piedmontese, Roman, French, and German), and the title cartouche carries a decorative vignette.

Published and revised by the Homann Heirs in Nuremberg, 1790, with a corrected second state issued in 1798 — a late production from this long-running firm’s final decades, well after its founding generation.
