Description:

Very decorative woodcut depicting the Holy Lance (also known as the Spear of Longinus or Spear of Destiny), which according to Christian tradition was used to pierce the side of Jesus during the Crucifixion. The page includes portrait and description of Hildebertus epus (Bishop Hildebert of Le Mans).

Verso,  the top half of the page describes the founding of the Cistercian Order in 1098 by Robert of Molesme, Alberic of Cîteaux, and Stephen Harding. The large woodcut depicts a Cistercian monastery, symbolizing their commitment to poverty and strict adherence to the Rule of Saint Benedict. Below the monastery woodcut, there are two portraits representing Robertus abbas (Saint Robert of Molesme) and Stephanus abbas (Saint Stephen Harding), the key early leaders of the order. The bottom text block, beginning with “Duces christiane expeditionis…”, chronicles the departure of the leaders of the First Crusade toward Antioch and Jerusalem in 1096. Comes from Hartmann Schedel’s the Latin edition of the “Liber chronicarum” published in 1493.

The Nuremberg Chronicles was the first printed history of the known world with about 2000 woodcuts the most picturesque work of the early time of printing. It became one of the most popular books of the 15th. century. The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, teacher of Albrecht Dürer and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger.
