1545 – S. Munster – Tabula Nova Prima Europa
Title: “Tabula Nova Prima Europa”
The rare, FIRST edition, of Munster’s first modern map of the European continent oriented to the south. Shows the continent from Constantinople and Greece to the east and Spain to the southwest. With Denmark, England, Scotland and Ireland to the bottom of the map. Decorated with a beautiful sailing ship.
An important edition of Ptolemy, with redesigned maps and the text revised by Sebastian Munster, based on the Willibald Pirckheimer Latin translation, with corrections of 1535 by Servetus.
The map comes from Sebastian Münster & Claudius Ptolemy’s “Geographia universalis, vetus et nozva, complectens Claudii Ptolemaei Alexandrini enarrationis libros VIII …”, published by Henricus Petri in Basel, 1545.
This work was considered one of the most influential cartographic accounts of the ancient world and served as inspiration for all Renaissance mapmakers.
