1593 – C. De Jode – Pomeraniae

1,200

Title:                 “Pomeraniae utriusq Contientis…” & “Thietmarsorum Simbricae Chersonesi Populorum…”

Description:
Extremely rare map of Grand Duchy of Pomerania. The second edition with the map of Prussia now removed. Latin text on verso.

Comes from the Cornelis de Jode’s atlas “Speculum Orbis Terrae…”published by Vidua et Heredus Gerardi de Iudaeis in Antwerp, 1593.

De Jode maps are extremely rare because the publication of his atlas was deliberately hampered by his cartographic rival Abraham Ortelius who quite rightly perceived De Jode as a serious threat to his dominance of 16th century atlas and map publishing. Ortelius was very well connected and used his influence to block the publication of De Jode’s ‘Speculum Orbis Terrae’ for over five years. De Jode’s maps are visually stunning but continued interference by Ortelius resulted in commercial failure and they are rarely available today because so few copies of the atlas were ever sold.

Cartographer:     Cornelius de Jode (1558-1600)
Frame size:            51,7 x 41,5 cm
Year:                        1593
Technique:            copper engraving

Good condition. Original contemporary hand coloring on watermarked paper. Green color oxidation’s cracks and few losses professionally restored. For protective reasons backed with tiny Japanese tissue.
