Description:
Very beautiful panoramic view of the city of Lisbon, Portugal, as seen from the Tagus River side. It illustrates the city of Lisbon prior to the devastating 1755 earthquake, which destroyed much of the older infrastructure depicted. It includes two coats of arms in the sky and a numbered legend at the bottom identifying 34 key locations, such as the royal castle (Castelli regia), the cathedral, and various monasteries and churches.
Comes from Johann Ludwig Gottfried book “Neuw Archontologia Cosmica, das ist Beschreibung aller …”, engraved by Matthäus Merian and published by W. Hoffmans in Frankfurt, 1646.
