1690 – V. M. Coronelli – Lituania dedicata

1,500

Title:                      “Lituania Dedicata All’Illustrissimo Signore Gio: Pietro Caualli Segretario della Serenisima Republica di Venetia…”

Description:
Very rare and a detailed map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, extending into parts of present-day Poland, Latvia and Belarus. It shows the main river systems, a dense network of towns and roads, and the bordering regions of Samogitia, Courland, Livonia, Prussia, Podlasie and Volhynia.

Large title cartouche with a formal dedication to Venetian secretary Gio Pietro Cavalli, he was one of the atlas’ sponsor. A second ornamental cartouche (scale/notes) and numerous coats of arms scattered across the map—including the Lithuanian Vytis—typical of Coronelli’s bold, baroque style.

The map comes from Coronelli’s atlas “Corso geografico universale, o sia, La terra divisa nelle sue parti, e subdistinta ne’ suoi gran regni / esposta in tavole geografiche, ricorrette, et accresciute di tutte le nuove scoperte, ad uso dell’Accademia cosmografica degli Argonauti dal padre maestro Vincenzo Coronelli M.C…” published in Venice, 1690.
