1693 – N. de Fer – Exagone Fortifie

30

Title:                      “EXAGONE Fortiflé avec toutes sortes de dehors. A Paris ches to s de For dans Jole du Pataw sur le Quay de Lorloge a le Sphere Royale. Avec Privilege du Roy. 1690.”

Description:
Very decorative diagram illustrating a theoretical hexagonal fortress layout with various “outworks” (dehors) designed to provide multiple layers of defense. The print includes detailed definitions of fortification terms in French, such as:
Bastion plat: A flat bastion placed in the middle of a curtain wall.
Demi bastion: A half-bastion used primarily on riverbanks.
Bastion tenaille: A bastion with indented faces.
Redens: Defensive works constructed along a line, like a parapet.

The work served as an illustrated treatise on the varieties of military forts and defensive designs used by the French military under royalty. It specifically highlights the complex defensive lines (circumvallation and contrevallation) used to surround and pressure a star-shaped fortress during a siege.

The engraving comes from the Nicolas de Fer atlas “Les Forces de l’Europe, ou Description des principales villes, avec leurs fortifications.” engraved by Herman van Loon, published in Paris, 1693.
