Very decorative diagrams and description tables illustrating a features panels, each illustrating fundamental geometric shapes and polygons essential for understanding fortification design.
The work served as an illustrated treatise on the varieties of military forts and defensive designs used by the French military under royalty. It specifically highlights the complex defensive lines (circumvallation and contravallation) used to surround and pressure a star-shaped fortress during a siege.
The engraving comes from the Nicolas de Fer atlas “Les Forces de l’Europe, ou Description des principales villes, avec leurs fortifications.” engraved by Herman van Loon, published in Paris, 1693.
