A very rare, large and a detailed panoramic view of the city of Freising, Germany, including the prominent Freising Cathedral on the hill. The print includes a compass rose in the foreground and two elaborate coats of arms are shown in the top corners. A numbered key at the bottom right identifies 26 specific buildings and landmarks within the scene.
The engraving comes from by Michael Wening atlas “Historico-topographica descriptio. Das ist: Beschreibung, dess Churfürsten- und Hertzogthumbs Ober- und Nidern Bayrn, welches in vier Theil oder Rennt-Aembter, als Oberlands München und Burgkhausen, Underlands aber in Landshuet unnd Straubing abgetheilt ist […]. Thail 1. München: bey Johann Lucas Straub, gem: lobl. Landtschafft Buchtruckern, anno M.DCCI.”, published by Johann Lucas Straub in München 1701. The work contains a total of 846 illustrations across four volumes, documenting cities, monasteries, and castles throughout Bavaria. Michael Wening works are highly valued by historians because those he created in loco (on-site) feature a high degree of precision, documenting buildings before later Baroque renovations.
