Description:
Detailed early map of China, based upon Du Halde’s map of China, published circa 1736. Map extending to the Gobi Desert in the North and including Formosa and Hainan Islands, with a large decorative cartouche and explanatory table, based upon the works of Du Halde and D’Anville. Chinese, Tartar and Latin names for features such as rivers and lakes. The title cartouche at lower right is flanked by Chinese dragons. A decorative and informative map revealing European knowledge of China in the mid-eighteenth century.
