Title: “Partie orientale de la Nouvelle France ou du Canada : avec l’isle de Terre-Neuve et de Nouvelle Escosse, Acadie et Nouv. Angleterre avec fleuve de St. Laurence”
Description:
A remarkably detailed map of North Eastern Canada, including Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador. The vertical projection shows the St. Lawrence River running nearly north-south, along the coastlines and rivers many locations noted, both European and Indian, including Casco Bay, the Penobscot River, Wells, and Cape Elizabeth. At bottom right is presented a scene with several types of ships on the waves of the ocean. The title cartouche features numerous scenes and imagery of Poseidon and Artemis (representing the land and sea), Indian chiefs, explorers, Hermes and Ares watching over a mapmaker, a fleet of ships, fishermen and wildlife.
Comes from the atlas “Grosser Atlas” in Augsburg 1756.
