Beautiful and very detailed engraving displaying the hourque, a small vessel invented by the Dutch to navigate their canals. Letters displays:
A the ram. B the stern. C rudder. D lantern. E flag staff. F weather vane. G aft chamber. H gun ports. I sole. K the gaff. L the mainmast. M bowsprit. N furled sails.
Yacht, a small decked and masted vessel, which draws very little water and is good for short crossings. Letters displays:
A rudder. B the helmsman. C mizzen mast. D mizzen yard & its furled sail. E mainmast. F the yard. G furled mainsail. H the anchor.
The engraving comes from Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert, based on a work by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, book “Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers…”, drawn by Goussier, engraved by Benard Direx, published in Geneve, 1778.
