Description:
Rare and very detailed antique map of the Neumark (New March), the historical eastern territory of Brandenburg, newly drafted and divided according to its administrative districts (Kreise) by German cartographer Franz Ludwig Güssefeld. The map covers the region bordered by Hinterpommern (Farther Pomerania) to the north, Polen (Poland) to the east, Schlesien (Silesia) to the south, and the Uckermark/Mittelmark to the west, with the Oder and Warthe (Warthe Fl.) rivers clearly traced through the territory.
The nine constituent Kreise are individually hand-colored and identified by two-letter abbreviations (KK – Königsberg, SoK – Soldin, LK – Landsberg, FK – Friedeberg, AK – Arensvalde, DK – Dramburg, SK – Schiefelbein, StK – Sternberg, CrK – Crossen, ZK – Züllichau, SchK – Schwiebus), fully explained in an extensive legend (“Erläuterung der Zeichen und Buchstaben”) in the upper left corner detailing town ranks, church types, mills, noble estates, and administrative seats.
The lower right features an elegant neoclassical title cartouche in the form of a stone altar/pedestal set beneath trees, bearing the imprint: published in Nuremberg by Weigel und Schneider, 1789, under Imperial privilege (“Mit Kayserl. allergnst. Privil.”). A pair of scale bars (German/geographic miles and large miles) appears below the cartouche too.
Franz Ludwig Güssefeld was a highly influential Prussian cartographer, engineer, and surveyor renowned for creating exceptionally accurate regional and international maps.
