Description: 

Historically significant map documenting the theater of war during the French Revolutionary Wars of 1793, covering the vast region bounded by the river systems of the Rhine, Moselle, Meuse (Maas), Marne, Seine, and Scheldt. The map spans from Flanders and the Channel coast in the northwest, across Artois, Picardy, Champagne, and Lorraine, to the Rhineland, Alsace, Baden, and Württemberg in the east — encompassing the key military and political territories contested during the early years of the French Revolutionary campaigns, including the Austrian Netherlands, the Bishopric of Liège, Luxembourg, and the Palatinate.

Numerous towns are marked with small fortress/settlement symbols, and territorial boundaries are delicately outlined in hand-colored washes distinguishing the patchwork of contemporary states, bishoprics, and duchies. Two scale bars (Geographische Meilen and Französische Meilen) appear in the lower left.

The upper right corner bears an elaborate military trophy vignette — a pile of cannon, drums, flags, and halberds — beneath the title cartouche, reflecting the map’s wartime subject matter. The imprint credits the design to Franz Ludwig Güssefeld, published in Nuremberg by the Homann Heirs (“Nürnberg bey d. Homann. Erben”) under Imperial privilege, dated 1793.

Franz Ludwig Güssefeld was a highly influential Prussian cartographer, engineer, and surveyor renowned for creating exceptionally accurate regional and international maps.

Good, original condition. Contemporary coloring. Watermarked paper. A round collector’s/dealer stamp reading “Bücherei Heinrich Kohl” appears in the upper right corner, indicating a former collection provenance.
