Title:                      “MOSCUA.”

Description:

A charming small bird’s-eye view of Moscow, showing the city as it was around 1600, at the end of the reign of Tsar Boris Godunov and on the eve of the Time of Troubles.

The view shows the whole city inside its rings of walls:

  • The Kremlin in the centre, with its cathedrals and towers, on the bank of the Moskva river.
  • Kitay-gorod, the walled merchants’ quarter next to the Kremlin.
  • Bely Gorod (the White Town), the stone wall with many towers built in 1585–1593, which surrounds the centre in a wide arc.
  • The outer timber wall (Skorodom), built in 1591–1592 under Boris Godunov. It encloses the whole city in a great oval, including Zamoskvorechye on the other side of the river. The wall was burned in 1611 and later replaced by the earthen rampart of Zemlyanoy Gorod, where the Garden Ring runs today.
  • The rivers: the Moskva (“Moscua”) and the Yauza (“Iausa fluvius”), with the streets, churches, monasteries, gardens and bridges of the city.

The view belongs to the family of early plans of Moscow based on a Russian survey from the time of Boris Godunov. This survey reached Western Europe in the early 17th century and was published by Braun and Hogenberg (1617), Hessel Gerritsz and Matthäus Merian (1638). It remained the standard image of Moscow in Western books for many decades.

Extremely rare, never seen on the market.
