Titles: "Polo Settentrionale, o Boreale, et Artico"

One of the most remarkable and rare polar gore, or calotte, for Coronelli's large (110cm) globe. It depicts the Arctic north of the 70th degree latitude with a 7-line description around the North Pole. Shows the North Pole with the coasts of Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia and Siberia, and is decorated with pictorial scenes of bear, seal and whale hunters.

"In the early 1680s Vincenzo Coronelli constructed two vast globes - terrestrial and celestial - over fifteen feet in diameter for Louis XIV. These globes were drawn and painted by hand, whereas Coronelli's globes of 1688 were based on printed gores of which sets are extant in the British Library and Library of Congress. They represent a globe of 110 centimetres in diameter: one of the largest based on printed gores hitherto. The polar calottes were printed separately.
The engraving and design throughout is of the highest standard with neat contrasting lettering and five large cartouches of singular grace and elegance. . . ." (Shirley)

The map comes from Coronelli’s atlas “Corso Geografico Universale, o sia, La terra divisa nelle sue parti, e subdistinta ne’ suoi gran regni / esposta in tavole geografiche, ricorrette, et accresciute di tutte le nuove scoperte, ad uso dell’Accademia cosmografica degli Argonauti dal padre maestro Vincenzo Coronelli M.C…” published in Venice, 1691.

Titles: "Terre Artiche"

One of the most remarkable depiction of the North Pole, Arctic Circle, Greenland, Spitzbergen, with parts of Canada, Iceland and Europe. The title cartouche is surrounded by clouds and wind-blowing cherubs and includes a formal dedication to Venetian secretary Ercole Lepoli, he was one of the atlas’ sponsor. Known discoveries are clearly engraved while coastlines that are subject to speculation are less defined. It includes the description of discovery of Greenland by Herico Russo in 982AD followed by Danish voyages in 1379 and also the discoveries made by Barentsz, John Davis, William Baffin, Henry Hudson, Antonio Zeno and Sir Thomas Button. A large cartouche on the center is adorned with ice sheets. The map is a significant historical artifact, illustrating the geographical understanding of the Arctic regions in the late 17th century.

Title: "Charon Rudbechii”

Description:
Rare and very decorative map of Scandinavia by Samuel Parker, covering all of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland along with parts of modern day Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.

The map includes three inset maps of the environs of Gothenburg, Fredrikstad and an anthropomorphic map of the Baltic Sea as Charon, the mythological ferryman of the dead, after Olof Rudbeck. The sea is rendered as a cloaked and bearded figure holding an oar, his form composed of the coastal outlines. This allegorical inset serves both as an emblem of the North’s mythic character and as a reflection of Swedish nationalistic science and cosmography during the Age of Greatness.

The map is dedicated to John Carteret - ambassador to Sweden from Hanoverian Britain.

The 97th card is the “fool” or “matto,” which lists the abbreviations used on the maps. Also included are 3 preliminary cards: illustration of Atlas, title card, and dedication card.

The card was published in two formats, as part of a Minchiate deck and in a miniature pocket atlas "Nuovo Atlante Generale metodico ed elementare tascabile per lo studio della geografia ed istoria antica e moderna : arricchite di varie carte delle nuove scoperte", prepared by Agostino da Rabatta and Giovanni de Baillou, engraved by Aniello Lamberti, published in Venice, 1779.

Title: ""

Description:

Map of Northern Europe and centered on Poland, the First Printed Modern Map of Northern & Central Europe.

The map is very important for Lithuania, because it is the second printed map to feature Lithuania's name.

Cartographically the Scandinavia map is based on the manuscript map by Claudius Clavus 1427 , printed «Ulm 1482 map» and a map of Europe based on manuscript map of 1460 of Germany by Cardinal Nicolas Cusanus (Nikolaus of Kues, Nicolaus de Cusa; his original name was Nicholas Kryffts), printed at Eichstätt in 1491.

Latin edition.

Page number: CCXCIX

The author of the chronicle was a Nuremberg bibliophile, physician Hartmann Schedel, who spent his whole life collecting information for the chronicle. He had amassed a huge personal library, which was extremely useful to him when compiling his “Liber Chronicarum”. His library contained 370 manuscripts and 670 printed works, including the works of the most famous Italian and German humanists. For that time, it was a truly extensive personal library. The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Albrecht Dürer may also have collaborated. Antonius Koberger, one of the most serious printers in Nuremberg, was chosen to print “Liber Chronicarum.” He started his printing business in 1470 with the establishment of a modest printing house. The chronicle was commissioned by the wealthy Nuremberg merchants Sebald Schreyer and his son-in-law Sebastian Kammermeister.

It is believed that the Latin edition may have been printed in about 1,500 copies, and the German edition in about 1,000 copies. This is a very large circulation, since incunabula were usually printed in an edition of 100–300 copies. The chronicle was sold at different prices: an unbound and uncolored copy cost two guilders, a bound copy cost six. It is known that in 1509 there were still 571 copies left unsold, of which 47 were unbound.

The chronicle was printed in two editions, in Latin and German, both in large folio format. The Latin chronicle has 326 leaves, is 43 x 30 cm in size, and has two colophons. They indicate the date of publication differently: the first states that the printing was completed on the fourth day of June 1493, the second – that on the 12th day of July of the same year. The German edition was completed on the 23rd day of December 1493. About 400 copies of the Latin and 300 copies of the German edition of “Liber Chronicarum” have survived to this day.

[...] In the foreground on the narrow neck of this strait is a castle, but on the opposite side the mouth of the strait has been so narrowed by pilings driven into the seabed with crossbeams set above them that those seeking to sail in or out can be easily overcome artillery."
