Title:                      “Delineation… 1703 in Littauen unweit Birsen beÿ Sallaten…”

Description:
Extremely rare copper engraving Saločiai battle plan. It was the largest battle in the territory of present-day Lithuania, taking place on March 29, 1703, between the town of Saločiai (from which the battle takes its name) and the village of Šakarniai. From Joniškis, through Linkuva, Pasvalys and Saločiai, towards Biržai, a corps of 1,200 Swedish infantry, 128 cavalry and 200 cavalry led by Major General Colonel Adam Ludwik Lewenhaupt and allied Grand Marshal Aleksandras Povilas Sapiega of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Aleksandras Povilas Sapiega, marched towards Biržai. Here he clashed with a combined force of 3,700 Russian infantry and 3,200–3,500 Lithuanian cavalry, armed with 11 cannons, which had set up a camp-wagenburg in a strategic location near the ford on the Mūša River. The Swedes won the battle, thus demonstrating the superiority of the regular army.

The engraving comes from the atlas “Ausfürliche Lebens-Beschreibung Carl des XII, Königs in Schweden…”, published in Vol. 1-9 Nuremberg, Frankfurt & Leipzig 1717.
