Title:                     Nouveaux Mémoires sur l’état présent de la Grande RUSSIE ou Moscovie…”

Description:

Two volumes of rare book by Friedrich Christian Weber including large folding map of the Russian Empire, a plan of the city of Saint Petersburg and one engraved plate representing the castle of Kronslot. First Edition in French, translation by P. Malassis from a German edition published in Frankfurt 1721. The books are a collection of the most diverse information about Russia of that time. Passing over political and military events in silence, the author, describing events before 1720, discusses the significance of Peter’s reform, to which he attaches great importance. This work gives us an interesting picture of the internal transformation of Russia. In addition to a wealth of valuable data for the history of relations between Peter and Alexei, Weber provides much information about Russia’s relations with England, about the life and institutions of Russians, about the views of society and the people on Peter’s reform. The first volume of Weber’s work, with the exception of the preface and appendices, was translated into Russian by Barsov.
