(In the year 1719 this extra-large wild goose was caught alive by this princely pointer in the reeds of a pond near Maulbronn.)

Description:

This is an original etching and engraving by Johann Elias Ridinger (1698–1767) of Augsburg, dated 1745. It belongs to his series of “most wondrous stags and other remarkable animals”, published from 1740. Each plate records a real event: an unusual animal hunted, shot or caught by a prince or his huntsmen, with the date and place in the inscription.

Here, in 1719, a spotted pointer belonging to the ducal court of Württemberg plunged into the reeds of a pond near the monastery of Maulbronn. It caught alive an exceptionally large wild goose. Ridinger shows the dog holding the struggling goose at the water’s edge, its wings spread and its neck stretched out. Tall reeds, a dense thicket and leafy trees fill the scene with his typical rich detail.

Comes from the book “Genaue und richtige Vorstellung der wundersamsten Hirschen sowohl als anderer besonderlichen Thiere…”, Augsburg, (plate 36).
