1798 – L. A. Mellin – Der Fellinsche Kreis
Title: “No. VII: Der Fellinsche Kreis” & “Le Cercle de Felllin”
Very rare, decorative and detailed map of central Estonia, including the Lake Võrtsjärv and Järva, Viljandi, Tartu and Jõgeva counties. The map features the coat of arms of Viljandi Kreis, one of the province of Livonia in the 18th and 19th centuries.
It has been created by the general staff officer and Riga district administrator Ludwig August von Mellin after survey of Livonia, which had become necessary after the Russian administrative reform of 1783, on the orders of Grand Duke Paul and following the example of A. W. Hupel. The result of the project that lasted more than 10 years was the atlas “Atlas von Liefland, oder von den beyden Gouvernementern u. Herzogthümern Lief- und Ehstland, und der Provinz Oesel…” (other contributors Karl Jaettnig, Friedrich Guimpel, J. N. Champion, F. G. Franz and Johann Wilhelm Krause). Engraved by Carl Jäck, F. Guimpel, F.G. Franz, and J.N. Champion. Published by Johann Friedrich Hartknoch in Riga and Leipzig, 1798.
