Description:
Very rare Ptolemaic map of European Sarmatia (Sarmatia Europae), a historical classical region covering modern-day Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Southern Russia. The map prominently features the Tauric Chersonese (Crimea Peninsula) pointing down into the Palus Maeotis (Sea of Azov) on the lower right. It features ancient mountain ranges like the Hyperborean and Riphean mountains drawn in a stylized, early Renaissance pictorial format.
Verso, on left side (Nona Evro) depicts the ancient Roman Balkans and Central-Eastern Europe. It clearly marks ancient provinces such as Dacia (modern Romania & Moldova), Iaziges Metanaste, Mysia Superior and Inferior (modern Serbia, Bulgaria), and Thracia. The right side (Pae Tabula) showing the Sicily island, Italy.
Silvano’s 1511 book is famous for being one of the earliest to utilize two-color printing (red ink for major regional names and black ink for local topography and smaller text labels).
Comes from the Bernardus Sylvanus book „Claudii Ptholemaei Alexandrini Liber Geographiae cum tabulis et universali figura et cum additione locorum quae a recentioribus reperta sunt diligenti cura emendatus et impressus.”, published by Jacobus Pentius de Leucho in Venice, 1511.
