1593 – C. De Jode – Poloniae Amplissimi

Title:                 “Poloniӕ Amplissimi Regni .. Typvs Geographicvs”

Extremely rare map of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Second edition with portrait of King Sigismund III Vasa (1566-1632), ruler from 1587 to the year of his death. Visible traces of a blurred portrait of King Stefan Batory from a plate executed in 1576.

Comes from the Cornelis de Jode’s atlas “Speculum Orbis Terrae…” published by Vidua et Heredus Gerardi de Iudaeis in Antwerp, 1593.

De Jode maps are extremely rare because the publication of his atlas was deliberately hampered by his cartographic rival Abraham Ortelius who quite rightly perceived De Jode as a serious threat to his dominance of 16th century atlas and map publishing. Ortelius was very well connected and used his influence to block the publication of De Jode’s ‘Speculum Orbis Terrae’ for over five years. De Jode’s maps are visually stunning but continued interference by Ortelius resulted in commercial failure and they are rarely available today because so few copies of the atlas were ever sold.
