500 €
Title: “Circolo per formare la sfera Armilare. Rome: Presso la Calcografica Camerale, 1795.”
Description:
A rare armillary sphere gore set engraved by an Italian engraver, Bernardino Olivieri, for Giovanni Maria Cassini. The engraving includes segments of the globe divided into twelve parts, as well as other elements intended for the construction of an armillary sphere. If assembled, the armillary sphere would have a diameter of about 28 cm, while the central globe in segments would have a diameter of about 5 cm. The various rings of the armillary sphere include the Equator, the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Polar and Antarctic zones and circles. Around these segments, concentric circles indicate climatic zones such as the temperate zone, the cold zone, and the torrid zone, with Latin and Italian notations designating the Polar circles, the Equator, and the tropics. The paper is Dutch, watermarked Van Der Ley.
