Title:                      “Nouvel Atlas ou Theatre du Monde.”​

Description:
The title page from a French text edition of Novus Atlas sive Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the second volume with regions of Asia, Africa and America.
To the left is Ptolemy with a sphere and pair of compasses. Marinus holding a map to the right. The design is copied from the title page of Mercator’s 1578 edition of Ptolemy.
The copper plate was engraved in 1644, after a title page of Mercator. Janssonius has added his address in the plinth, later the date was altered to 1645, 1647, 1649, and finally the date was erased.
