1693 – V. M. Coronelli – Citta di Venetia

Titles:           “CITTA DI VENETIA Descritta Dal P. Coronelli Cosmografo Della Serenissima Republica”

“Dedicata All’Illustrissimo Signo Abbate Abbondio Rezzonico Patrizio Veneto MDCLXXXXIII”

One of the most beautiful, extremely decorative and rare large bird’s-eye view of Venice, Italy. It derived from Matthaeus Merian smaller view of Venice published in 1635. In the right side cartouche the dedication to Cardinal Abbondio Rezzonico and the date 1693. The depiction of Venice is of such fine detail that all individual structures are easily recognisable, surrounded by a winding garland containing crests of Venice’s leading families and the Venetian lion in top centre.

The map comes from Vincenzo Maria Coronelli atlas “Corso Geografico Universale…” published in Venice, 1693.
