1552 – S. Munster – Les Monstres Marins

Title:                      “Les Monstres Marins & Terrestres, Lesquelz on Trouve en Beaucoup de Lieux es Parties Septentrionales”

Spectacular woodcut of mythical land with sea monsters and animals. The monsters first were engraved in the ‘Carta Marina’ of 1539 by Olaus Magnus and have been used by many mapmakers to illustrate their maps. Among the monsters are various forms of whales, huge lobsters, a sea serpent, the whale fish, a pig faced sea beast and the Sea Buffalo. The map also illustrates animals: reindeer, beavers, sables, bears, a wolverine, snakes and huge cat.

The woodcut comes from the first French edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmography, titled “La Cosmographie Universelle, contenant la situation de toutes les parties du monde, auecleurs proprietez & appartenances”, drawn by Hans Rudolf Manuel – Swiss painter and artist,  engraved by Martin Hoffmann, published  by Heinrich Petri in Basel, 1552.
