Very decorative title page from the Amsterdam edition of Pieter Mortier and Nicolas de Fer’s important work “Les forces de l’ Europe.” It shows a military camp, several architects present their plans to the Dauphin who prefers those of Vauban. Inscription at the bottom of the plate: “We warn that this book is the second part of the Introduction to Fortification, the first of which was given last year, and that Sr. De Fer will give a part of it every year. composed of the same number of plans which will be sold like this one in Paris at the author’s, in Isle du Palais on the Quay de l’Orloge at the Royal Sphere “.
