Title:                   “Carte des isles du Iapon esquelles est remarqué la route tant par mer que par terre qui tiennent les Hollandois pour se transporter de la ville de Nangasaqui a Iedo demeure du roi des mesmes isles”​


Description:

A rare map of Japan, which is reduced version of Tavernier larger map. It contains comments about the nature of the country, Ocsaqui (Okazaki) is said to have the most beautiful women, Lake Biwi is said to be where one can catch quantite de saumons, an island, which could be Tsushima, is described as the island where worthless youths are sent and made to work until their relations remove them. Tavernier marked three places where there were alleged to be silver mines too.

The map engraved by Jean-Louis Durant and published by Jean-Baptiste Tavernier in “Recüeil de Plusieurs Relations et Traitez singuliers et curieux de J.B. Tavernier, Chevalier, Baron D Aubonne. Qui n ont point efté mis dans fes fix premier Voyages.” in Paris 1679.
