Description:
Very decorative plan of the fortified city of Dunkirk, France. The map details the fortifications and surrounding areas, including the “Renvoy de Bastions” (Bastion layouts) and “Esplanade de la Citadelle”. It includes a key listing various bastions and demi-lunes, indicating which areas are covered by water at high tide (“Ce cy est Couvert d’Eau quand la Marée est Haute”).
The text at the bottom describes Dunkirk’s geographical coordinates and historical significance, noting its capture by the French from the Spanish in 1668 and its reputation as one of Europe’s most beautiful and strong places.
The engraving comes from the Nicolas de Fer atlas “Les Forces de l’Europe, ou Description des principales villes, avec leurs fortifications.” engraved by Herman van Loon, published in Paris, 1693.
