Highly detailed bird’s eye view of Boston and harbor. The Society For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge was founded by John, Earl Russell. The Society’s main purpose was to encourage universal literacy by publishing numbers of books of good quality that would be affordable to the poor.

The map comes from the atlas “Maps Of The Society For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge” engraved by B. R. Davies and published by George Cox in London, 1853.
